Art in the Waldegrave

Created by Local Artists

The Waldegrave Pub in East Harptree is exhibiting works by local artists, many of which are for sale.  This is the same group of artists that came together to host their own exhibition and weekend of workshops "The Big Arts Weekend" in October 2024, in the absence of the Chew Valley Arts Trail.

Below are the artist profiles and artworks displayed in the exhibition in the Waldegrave pub. Click on the slideshows to see further details about the artwork.

Mary studied at the Chelsea School of Art and Central School of Art in London in the 1980s.  Mary's paintings are a response to specific subjects, an exploration of composition, light and colour through the medium of oil paint and watercolour.  Mary's subjects are varied, from landscapes and portraiture to still-life, and it is the play of light and resulting colours and tones that concerns her.  Mary likes to convey the responses to these observations and feeling for intense colour through the physicality of paint.

Pauline has been working in the art environment for many years as a teacher, tutor, facilitator and as an artist in her own right.  Pauline's work evolves from a very intuitive reaction to the mark, that develops into an abstract image.  Pauline works in mixed media on canvas, board and print using a variety of techniques which include mono etching lithograph and collage.

Crafty Pub Sessions

In the Spring of 2025, when we were planning where to put artwork from local artists into The Waldegrave, Mike mentioned he would love to have a tapestry to hang in the alcove next to the fire in the pub. Ali Brown and Jackie Head decided to step up to the challenge. A few conversations later and drawing on the memory of many walks
in Harptree Combe with her children, Jackie created a rough template, brought together a colour palette of wool and fabric and invited local people to join in with the community Tapestry ‘A Child’s Eye View of the Coombe’. Play is at the centre of the project. People were invited to imagine seeing as a child does and adding their own ideas into the overall piece. Over a 3 month period 20 different people joined workshops that were offered several times a week, with one each week always held in the pub.

When the project ended people wanted to continue to make art together as so began ‘Crafty Pub’ a 2 hour session once a fortnight on a Wednesday afternoon in the pub. People can bring along something they are working on or join in with community based projects. This far we have created cushions to go under the tapestry and learned techniques for making pictures in fabric. Several members entered their work into the East Harptree Flower and Craft show. Our next project will be to create a piece of art for the ceiling of the cafe area in the Community Shop. We are open to ‘commissions’ for future art in the community: just pay for materials and we will get to work!
