Please stay in touch for future opportunities.

An exciting new project has been initiated in the rural village of East Harptree, located in the heart of the Chew Valley, an area of outstanding natural beauty.

What is the Arts Hub at East Harptree?

The Arts Hub at East Harptree is a project conceived of by village volunteers, and makes use of a newly available space upstairs at East Harptree village hall. The Arts Hub will support two artists (interested? Apply here) in the form of free studio space for a year from January 2024, and at the same time encourage and facilitate engagement (workshops, exhibitions, events) between them and the local community, especially those who would not normally have access to the arts. We need an arts administrator to support both the artists and their outreach work within the community.

The Arts Hub is funded by community infrastructure levy money granted by the Parish Council.

ARTS ADMINISTRATOR
JOB DESCRIPTION

Background

The East Harptree Village Hall is looking for a part-time arts administrator to help initiate a new arts project based at the village hall.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Role: Arts administrator

The arts administrator is a key role within this brand new project and will act as an intermediary, liaison officer and facilitator for and with the artists. Your role is to act and think creatively and positively in order to help connect the artists with the relevant groups for outreach work. The nature of the liaison work will depend on the artists and the specific support they need. For example: certain artists may know exactly who they want to connect with, but it might be that you need to support the artists in their journey to finding the people who will benefit most from the type of work that they do.

Main roles and responsibilities

  • To be the main point of contact with the two artists who will be renting the space.

  • To act as the intermediary between the artists and the village hall committee.

  • To liaise between artists and village hall as required to ensure the artists’ needs are met.

  • To be adaptable and versatile in what services you can offer the artists, depending on their needs.

  • To understand the nature of the work undertaken by artists – their focus, themes and mediums – and help them to connect with the relevant groups within the local community and surroundings of East Harptree. These groups include but are not limited to: the preschool, primary school, elderly residents, those with limited access to the arts, those on low incomes.

  • To help administer and facilitate a series of around 12 events, workshops and/or exhibitions with the artists on a case-by-case basis. You will need to actively suggest relevant spaces the artists could use and groups they can connect with.

  • To help the artists book spaces and put together marketing promotional campaigns to attract relevant audiences and groups.

  • Keep the wider community up to date with the project’s progression, through mediums including social media and basic web updating.

Necessary attributes/qualities

  • To have a good working knowledge of the local area, its demographics and its various community groups.

  • To be able to act on initiative, with little direction or direct management, while still making sure you keep the committee fully informed on all aspects of the work undertaken.

  • To communicate effectively and efficiently with several groups, as well as managing communications between several different groups within the village.

  • To think creatively, being able to find the not-obvious solution.

  • To be sensitive to the needs and opinions of the local community.

  • To be technology literate, including being able to use email, computer and various research sources.

  • To be highly organised, with the ability to consider the needs of several different groups.

  • To be positive, approachable and happy dealing with different people from different backgrounds.

Desirable

To have a background in or enthusiasm for the arts and its ability to transform lives and horizons.

To have experience in events or events management.

Experience with social media or web updating.

Pay: £15 per hour, 24 hours a month.

Hours and days are not fixed and vary according to the work needed.

Reporting to: the village hall committee

Notice: one month

Timeframe: one year, from January 2024 to December 2024, with potential for it to continue, depending on funding.

You will need your own access to laptop and wifi.

Context

You will have the support of the village hall committee, as well as a subsidiary of the committee dedicated specifically to the Arts Hub project.
