Unleashing Imagination: Emma Powell's Outreach Workshop at East Harptree Primary School

We are excited to share news about the art outreach sessions that took place at East Harptree Primary School. Arts Hub artist in residence, Emma Powell, recently completed her outreach sessions with students in years 5-6, under the guidance of Ms Tomblin.

Emma conducted two long morning sessions that provided students the chance to explore their artistic skills by creating clay owls and assembling a collaborative mosaic. The project centred around the four owl houses of East Harptree Primary School, making it resonate personally for the students.

Discovering Scola Air-Dried Clay

The first session began with an introduction to Scola air-dried clay. Emma guided the students through quick owl modelling activities where they learned about additive techniques for building and how to use various tools to create patterns. Each child experimented with different shapes and textures.

Engaging in Collaborative Mosaic Art

Following the owl modelling, Emma introduced collaborative mosaic art, where students learned to roll out tiles and add texture to their designs. This segment of the session emphasized teamwork, as each student contributed to a collective mosaic.

Inspiring Painting Techniques

In the second session, the focus shifted to painting, with Emma teaching various techniques using brushes and sponges. Each student brought their clay owl and mosaic tiles to life by painting them with vibrant colours.

Celebrating the Students' Artworks

Emma has created a poster for the school that has incorporated a photograph of each owl made by the students placed together on one tree branch for a group display. The poster is displayed at the school to serve as a collaborative artwork.
