The Big Arts Weekend

The Big Arts Weekend is a two day community exhibition and weekend of art workshops located in the East Harptree Theatre and Arts Hub, featuring the work of nine local artists, plus a featured artist wall and a local artist gallery wall. The exhibition has run for two years and we are now excited to be preparing for our third year running in November 2026. Originating in October 2024, a similar group of artists came together to host their own exhibition and weekend of workshops in the absence of the Chew Valley Arts Trail, and it was such a success we have brought it back to the Chew Valley each year!

Patrick Barker

Patrick studied sculpture at Bath Academy of Art and has exhibited in many galleries. His work has been sold all over the world. A member of the Royal Society of Sculpture since 1997.

Amy Hostler

Amy is a multidisciplinary artist with a foundation in textile print design. She creates bold, dreamlike abstractions using the traditional pochoir technique of hand-cut stencils, alongside mixed media and digital processes. Inspired by gardens, landscapes, and the natural world, her vibrant compositions explore colour, pattern, and layered surfaces through a spirit of curiosity and experimentation.

Working intuitively, Amy embraces the unexpected, allowing each layer to evolve organically and capture fleeting moments of discovery. Immersed in the present moment, her work celebrates the interplay of colour, form, and texture, while inviting moments of joyful reflection.

Lucy Masters

Lucy is a landscape and wildlife photographer living in the Chew Valley. Much of her photography focuses on the Mendip Hills and surrounding countryside where she enjoys capturing local landscapes, wildlife and the changing seasons. With a strong interest in nature and the outdoors, Lucy’s photography reflects her appreciation of the natural world and the beautiful places close to home.

Giuliana Terran

Giuliana studied History of Art, as well as painting and drawing, in both London and Florence. Her work is grounded in a deep respect for what the past can teach us and is primarily figurative, exploring the human form through changes in age, size, sexuality, and gender. Life drawing plays a central role in her practice—not only as a vital way to refine drawing skills, but also as a means of engaging with ideas. She feels the body conveys our strength, beauty, vulnerability, and emotion, and that in representing it, we can convey our shared human experience.

Trained in a representational style, Giuliana enjoys moving between the techniques of the Old Masters and a more experimental, expressive approach. She believes the two can coexist harmoniously. While she primarily works with traditional materials such as oil paint, charcoal, pastel, and ink, she also finds joy in using unexpected surfaces and unconventional media, always open to the element of surprise in the creative process.

She teaches at the RWA and runs a monthly life drawing class in Chew Magna. A couple of years ago Giuliana founded Bristol and Bath Portrait Club, wanting to bring people together through the shared practice of drawing each other, in a relaxed friendly environment. This takes place at the Arnolfini, Holburne and at the RWA.
