Stained Glass Art Workshops across the Whole School at Pensford Primary
In June 2026, Arts Hub Artist in residence Jasmine Smail had the pleasure of leading art outreach sessions with students from Pensford Primary School. This is the first time an Arts Hub artist in residence has run themed art sessions throughout the entire school, rather than focussing on a particular year group. These particular workshops were to contribute towards an artwork exhibition for the Publow Church Art Competition which centered around the theme of 'Stained Glass'. The chosen entries were then exhibited in Publow Church and on display for parents and visitors to view over a few days.
Creative Collaborations in Duckling Class (Reception year)
Duckling class embarked on an imaginative collaging project, creating a collaborative stained glass den structure using vibrant coloured tissue paper and glue. After Jasmine explained the process of creating the den to the children, the piece was then left to the children to freely explore layering tissue paper to create an abstract artwork.
The children really enjoyed the whole process and everyone got stuck in. Once the structure was dry the class had a colourful stained glass den to explore! This hands-on experience not only fostered teamwork among the young artists but also allowed them to explore the sensory feeling of being surrounded by stained glass.
Dragonfly Class (Year 1 & 2)
Dragonfly class was guided by Jasmine Smail in crafting their own individual stained glass collages for the competition. Jasmine showed children how to utilise simple materials such as black tape, plastic sheets, colour tissue paper and glue to create stained glass effect collages. Each student brought their unique perspective and creativity to the theme, resulting in a diverse array of vibrant pieces. The children particularly liked holding their stained glass artworks up to the light to see the different colours!

Otter Class (Year 3 & 4)
Otter class was encouraged by Jasmine to think about other types of glass and the potential of stained glass, inspired by a piece in David Apakidze's exhibition KVOST. The students were asked to think of a view out of a window that you might see and recreate this using stained glass inspired collage. After drawing these views on paper, the children were guided in carefully outlining their drawing with black PVA glue on a plastic lid, and once dry was combined together with another lid to create a miniature stained glass window.

Kingfisher Class (Year 5 & 6)
Kingfisher class used icons and images of existing stained glass windows to create new narratives. Jasmine guided children to write a short story and then use collage materials to recreate this story in a new collage. The children were shown how to combine images with coloured paper to illustrate their story.

Leaving a Lasting Mark
Jasmine Smail's outreach sessions at Pensford Primary School were a great success with both students and teachers, highlighting the importance of art in education and the positive impact the Arts Hub workshops are having on children's appreciation for art. We are thankful to Jasmine for leading these sessions and especially for tailoring so well each session towards the abilities and needs of that year group.
